Dear Miss Jeedy,

I don’t know. I really don’t know. I don’t write letters the way I did anymore. Nowadays, there are emails, text chats, and instant messages. Oh yes, there is also a phone. It sort of weird to write love letters the way Napoleon did to many of his girlfriends. That also goes for Beethoven, Lewis Carroll, or even Victo Hugo. All I have to do is to pick up a phone.

Gone was the time when I sat through the night, writing a poem to the girl next door. No more were the days when I waited by the window for the postman to come, only to be disappointed when he kept moving along. I’ve lost the feeling of missing my heartbeats while opening the mail and reading the girl’s words, which were neatly written in purple ink. Oh yes, there also gone for good were the nights when I lay in bed, fully awake, dreaming of her, and smiling into the darkness. Yet, I had never told her that I loved her.

I guess I’m becoming a modern boy. My skin gets thicker; my dreams get shorter; and my romantic poems get dryer. My love messages go faster through the Internet. My emails get shorter and more to the point. The phrase “I love you” comes out much easier and more frequent between my lips. It’s strange, though, don’t you think? Somehow, it seems so much easier saying that three words in English than in Vietnamese. Actually … I don’t remember ever saying that in Vietnamese, even though I grew up in Vietnam and did fall in love more than once. Puppy love, may be, but it was love. I believed.

Oh well, now you ask me to write a love letter. How can I write a love letter? I’m no longer an eighteen-year-old, innocent Vietnamese boy who was deeply in love with his Vietnamese literature teacher! Time has carried me along. Reality has tossed me up, pulled me down, and swung me around like a little ball on a tether pole. Life has squeezed out every ounces of romantic juice in my body. And never more, there is a love letter left in my soul.

Some other times, Miss Jeedy. May be then, I can write complaint letters! I don’t know whom I am going to address my letters to, but I’m going to complain about lady bears. How could they be so cruel and take away my innocence? I’m going to complain about life. Why can’t it be nice and gentle, and let me ride along happily? I’m going to complain about reality. Why can’t I dream like I used to? And last, I’m going to complain about Miss Jeedy. Why does she make me write about things that I don’t know too well?

I guess all I can do now is to write something. Anything. And that’s all I can write, Miss Jeedy. Why don’t you write us a love letter as an example, and see how it goes?

Dear Sir,

First, I would like to send you my highest respectation, warmest greeting and best wishes on the occasion of your 2,500th birthday.

I'd like to take this chance to confide with you about Ms Earth .

I feel that our Mother Earth's getting older. She gets sick more and more often and changes her mood so hard that none can predict or forecast any phenomenon. You know, the causes to this come mostly from The Human Being, her children.

Our Mother Earth is really generous. We need land for shelters, crops and manufacture. We need timbers for houses and paper. We need thousands of minerals for industrial and daily activities. She's been donating us anything we ask for and at anytime we want. However, how have we behaved? Are we grateful at all?

We are making our Mother Earth exhausted. We've destroyed millions acres of forest. We've ended thousands of wild lives. We've exploited excessive minerals. We've polluted the air with pollutants released by industry, power generation and motor vehicles. We polluted the land with poor agricultural practices, pesticide use, mineral exploitation, industrial discharges and indiscriminate disposal of urban wastes. We polluted the water with sewage, chemical contaminants, oil spills. We are turning her color from fresh green to brown and black.

And, pollution is threatening environmental sustainability and having harmful effects on our health.

Our Mother Earth's temperature is getting higher, raising the speed of ice melting from two poles, plunging quite a great deal of land into the ocean (Vietnam is estimated to lose 3,000 sq km by 2015). She occasionally has a running nose and the floods come, bringing away houses, animals, crops and people (like the one in Myami in April, 2008). Besides, she sometimes startles and the earthquakes happen, destroying buildings, properties and everything on the surface where they take place ( like the one in China few days ago).

Many scientists and governments are rushing on action plans to slow the Mother Earth's aging. However, we won't be successful if anyone of us denies to lend a hand to protect our environment, protect ourselves and our spouts.

I would like to take this chance to make some wishes. I wish for a peaceful world with no war and animosity. I wish the poor around the world had better lives. I wish the human being would be more "HUMANE". I wish we could live in a GREEN mordern life. I wish lots of things... I wish all my wishes could come true.

Dear Human,

Greeting from your oldest friend Nature. We've known each other for quite awhile now. We have been coexisting for the past few hundred thousand years, and I wish that we will continue keeping each other's company for a long long time.

My dear little Human, please accept my condolences for your loss because of such horrible phenomena that are happening around you. I am sorry about what you call flood, typhoon, earthquake, or tornado, which destroys living things along its path. Sometimes, we giants forget how a gentle movement on our part could be so significant to small creatures like you. I will try to keep myself under control. I will also ask my friend, Mother Earth, to be a bit gentler.

Mother Earth and I have been friends since the beginning of time. Time doesn’t seem to affect us. We may have grown a bit older, but everything is relative. Few hundred thousand years has no affect on our 4.5 billion years of age. However, we do enjoy life more since you’ve came to live with us.

We enjoy being with you. We love to see how you were overwhelmed with joy when you got to the top of Mother Earth’s most embarrassed pimple, which you named Everest. We like to see you jump up and down with the thing that you called airplanes. Oh yes, we also laughed so hard when we figured that you were trying to hop back and forth between Mother Earth and her yo-yo, which you refer to as The Moon. You seem to take yourself so serious, and we love you for that. We love to see you grow.

Recently, we feel that you have been blaming yourself for ruining Mother Earth. You're worried that few tiny puffs of smoke from your cars or airplanes would hurt us. Now, I have to admit that the toy you played, which you call Atomic Bombs, did scratch Mother Earth a little, but that was still nothing. Also, it really is not your fault that Mother Earth sweats and causes flood. Mother Earth sometimes laughs and shakes her body a bit too hard, which causes Earthquake. Oh yes, Mother Earth also has a thing for my friend Sun. When he’s around, her face turns so red that would melt the ice at the two poles.

But other than that, my little Human, there is nothing to worry about. Don’t blame yourself for thing that doesn’t matter much. Mother Earth and I got out of hand once in awhile and did things that might not be appropriate. I remember we wrestled a bit too hard that little dinosaurs couldn’t take the shock and died. Sometimes, we forgot to turn on the heater and caused the Ice Age. Once in awhile, our thermostat broke, and Mother Earth got a bit warm, which lead to Global Warming. But it’s fine now. You may keep playing with your toys. We are big and strong. We can take little jokes here and there without any problems. We enjoy seeing you happy.

Dear Great Giant Friends,

We are very happy to hear from your giant world, and a bit surprised about your way of playing games, especially with us, the poor tiny creators.

We appreciate your welcoming to our coming and effort to keep our sustainability. However, we can’t stand your games on us anymore. The number of 78,000 dead people in the Nagris storm in Myanma and 50,000 ones in the latest earthquake in China, which can be nonsense to you, was a great lost for us. Or maybe you think that The Human is so crowded now that passing away a few thousand won’t cause much harm?

You tell me not to blame ourselves. So may we put all this blaming to you and the Giant World? Only your a bit too hard wrestling was enough to erase all of our most beloved pets – Dinosaurs out of the surface. So what would happened if you kissed each other and even did some further cherishing?

If you were our truly friends, kindly tell each other to behave more gentle to us. So that we can live in forever harmony . We will consider our toys and you do the same please. We don’t want to be too angry to make Mother Earth explode with some nuclear bombs and push Mr. Hot Sun to the lonely world of no heat no light. Only some of our tankers can kill a lot of your marine lives and let your seas wear ugly dirty faces. You know this quite clearly, don’t you, Ms Nature? We can also put an end to your green jacket by cutting all the rest forests and drain all the rivers. You’ll need quite a time to fix it. While you’re fixing it, we hide away for a while and come back soon to destroy your new work.

Those are the sincere words from the bottom of my heart. Kindly be nicer to the tiny Human, so that we can stay endlessly happily with each other.

My dear You,

So, it was your happiest day in life. I was wondering what I should have said to you. “Congratulations!” maybe? “Wish you well!” probably? How about “Wishing you two the best of luck, love, and happiness?” Well, that would do, too.

But it didn’t do it for me.

You had meant so much more than just a few common well wishes. Whatever I said would not be enough to evince my wishes for you, and whatever I had felt, I didn’t know how to express it to you. The feeling was buried deep inside. It was masked by my pretending being cool and logical. It had been hidden and faintly revealed only in my senseless imagination. And if you knew me well, you would probably be able to peek at a surface of my obsession. But that was as far as one can get. Since so long ago, I had closed the window of my soul. I had lived in silence and let life go by without knowing what I would be missing.

I could have quoted you a song or cited a poem, but I would not be able to do that either. The song I would quote would have been tuneless. The poem I would cite would have had no rhymes. I just stood quietly in the corner of my own world, watching you walking down the aisle. Somehow, at that moment, I imagined how peaceful you would always be, and so I wished to turn the imagination into reality.

I guess I am not making any sense. I am, after all, just a man without fancy words. What else can I tell you?

Dear Sir Valentine,

Once again, your day comes and brings in your spirit, spirit of love.

Love, which has had no satisfactory definitions so far, has existed among the human kind since Adam and Eva’s time. It is the tune of all songs and the rhyme of all poems on earth. It is the root of our sharpest pain and the origin of our utmost happiness, including tears and laughter. For some people, their love is even more important than their own lives; but for some other, they take advantages of their lovers to satisfy their ambition. Generally, love seems to be a part of the human kind. Where there is a heart, there is love.

Every year on your day, the world is sunk in beautiful colors, red of roses, brown of chocolate, sparkling under candlelight. All of them make love so holy and magnificent.

Nevertheless, out there on the streets, many lonely, cold hearts are wandering, looking for love…

I would like to take this opportunity to make some wishes.

I wish people who are in love would know how to cherish their loves and live in your spirit the rest of their lives.

I wish people who are in pain would get over soon and find their own ways to let love in again.

I wish lonely hearts would soon be filled with warm love.

And, may I make a special wish for a dearly special friend of mine? I wish YOU would find your Valentine and live the rest your life in beautiful, peaceful love. I don’t wish you an ideal partner but one who knows how worthy you are to love and to be loved.
