In Feb 2010, I volunteered to be a food caterer for the Tet Event in the city of BrokenHeart. I arrived early to help carrying the food - which consists of egg rolls, sweet rice, fried chicken wings, and roast pork - from the van into the auditorium where the event was to be taking place. While I was setting the tables I noticed a young lady who appears to be a volunteer herself. I casually said "Hi" whereas the lady greets me with the biggest smile that I've ever seen in a long time. She extended her hand and said "Hello, I am KD. Looks like we'll be working together" Taken off guard by what seems like genuine friendliness, I shook her hand. I instinctively notice she has got a small hand, being a petite person. She looks at me with her huge brown eyes, and said jokingly "That's a very strong handshake you got there." That 's when I noticed she is a very pretty. She wears no makeup, or so little makeup that I can't hardly tell. Her raven shoulder length hair contrasted sharply with her pale, flawless skin. She sported a t-shirt, sweater and jeans. Then we proceeded to set up the food on the table; she casually mentioned she's from downtown and asked me where I was from. She appears very interested in what I have to say, from time to time looking at me in the eyes and saying "Uh huh, uh huh" I feel very at ease talking to her, as if she's a friend I'd known for a long time. Pretty soon, we started talking like friends, about a variety of subjects, from gardening, to cooking, to work, to movies, to music. She admitted that she's by no mean a world renowned chief but can preprare most Vietnamese dishes in a decent fashion: Pho?, Bu'n Bo`, Ba'nh Canh, Cha? Gio`. She also appears to be a movie buff that incidentally likes the same genres of movie as me: romantic comedies, thrillers, epic tales. We talked and talked and never seemed to run out of topics, for hours. She oozes charisma and was very attentive to what I said. The festival goes on, and features songs, dances and play; but I neved paid any attention to all of that, as this young woman grows on me and totally captivates my mind. I was so going to ask her to go get some coffee with me, when the unexpected came up: her boyfriend who's supposed to pick her up showed up. "Hey Tuan, I would like you to meet my boyfriend, John", said KD. It hit me so hard. The realization that the woman I am smitten with is taken made my world scrumble. "Tuan, are interested in barbecue? We are having a party at our house in 2 weeks." asked KD. "I am sorry, I am tight up for the next two weekends" was my reply; I could almost see a hint of disappointment in her eyes, but I think it would be better this way. Later that day, even though we exchanged contact information, I have never called KD.
