Smile Food for thought 09_09_08: Lending A Hand!

A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles. --Washington Irving
    Be The Change:
Do something today (big or small) just to put a smile on someone's face.

    Reading Fact of the Day:
"Our son is my newest "Hockey Hero." He plays goalie on his small hometown ice hockey team. One weekend on matchday, we arrived a bit late and quickly found our seats and settled in. As I looked around, I noticed we were sitting with a family who had a mentally and physically handicapped child. We could hear the exciement in his voice when he said, "Mom, look the goalie is going to get the puck now!" Shamelessly, I listened to him and the excitment and joy in his voice as praised the goalie time and time again." So begins this real-life story of a son's simple but powerful gesture of kindness.

While you have a thing it can be taken from you... but when you give it, you have given it. No robber can take it from you. It is yours then for ever when you have given it. It will be yours always. That is to give. --James Joyce

The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. --F. Scott Fitzgerald

Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together. --Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"What does it mean to be convinced?" Neurologist-turned-writer Robert Burton explores that question from the standpoint of modern biology which tells us, "despite how certainty feels, it is neither a conscious choice nor even a thought process. Certainty and similar states of "knowing what we know" arise out of primary brain mechanisms that, like love or anger, function independently of rationality or reason. Feeling correct or certain isn't a deliberate conclusion or conscious choice. It is a mental sensation that happens to us." This article by Burton shares more fascinating insights on the dangers of "Being Certain".

Can a computer game inspire its players to do good deeds? A Montreal entrepreneur thinks so. Akoha.com takes the pay-it-forward idea of spreading acts of kindness and gives it a competitive edge: players vie over who is the most benevolent. Players on the website receive a pack of cards through the mail, each with a mission. These can be as simple as making someone smile to giving someone a book to donating an hour of one's time. Once the player completes the deed, he passes the mission card to the next person, hoping she will do the same unto someone else. On the website, people can add details about how they played the mission. Each card has a unique identity number, which lets players track how it is being passed on.
