The first lesson about love
Once upon a time, there was a gentle, kind-hearted man had been waiting for his first child. The child was a girl - the little angel. The man loved his “little girl” more than everything in the world. He wanted to give her whatever he had. He put all his expectation on the “little girl”. Unsurprisingly, by the love he gave her, the man was the first person to teach the “little girl” how to talk. He taught his “little girl” to call her mother as “my father’s wife”. The little girl didn’t care about it. She naturally absorbed what her father taught her. Or perhaps she was so young to realize this difference.

Three years later, she went to kindergarten. The man took her to kindergarten and picked her up every day. On the way coming home, the man showed her the grass fields and paddy fields in front of their home. The man and the little girl played around the grass fields and the man taguth the little girl how to catch grasshoppers. And she liked it very much. She was so excited when she caught a grasshopper.

“We needd to catch grasshoppers as often as possible. The grasshoppers are harmful for the paddy fields. They eat rice. If they eat all the rice in the paddy fields, there is nothing left for us. As a result, we cannot have enough rice to eat and my wife cannot make moon-cakes when the mid-autumn festival comes. Furtunately, our birds eat grasshoppers. Se we can cathch grasshoppers, put them in plastic bottle and bring them home for our birds.”

The little girl jumped up and down, she said: “yeah, daddy. I got o lot of grasshoppers here. Let’s go home, now. I’m so hungry. I can smell the dishes your wife cooks for us. Let’s go, daddy.”

She ran put of the grass ground to home. The man followed right behind her. There was a woman beaming with happiness when she looked at the little girl. The little girl rushed to the woman’s arms, kissed the woman: “ My father’s wife, I learned a lot of things today. I learned a new song in school.... I learned how to catch the grasshoppers.... Here is a bottle filled with grasshoppers..... and.... I learned that grasshoppers are bad for.... for...”.

The man smiled. He hugged the little girl, his wife by his muscular arms and said: “ Calm down, my daughter. You are more talkative than our birds. You will learn many other things as you grow up. For now, why dont we have dinner? Everything has been ready for us.”

Not long time later, the family moved from the country side to the city. There were grass fields or paddy fields. At the same time, the little girl went to primary school. Usually, the man was the person who picked her up from school. She had many friends, friennds at school, friends in her neighbors. She was so happy about that.

But one day, the fateful day came, when she cam back from school and played with the neighbor’s child. She confidently talke with the nieghbor’s child about her father’s wife: “ Mariam, you should come over to my home this mid-autumn festival. My father’s wife will make moon-cakes for us. They are really delicious, you will like them. They water my mouth whenever I talk about them.”

Accidently, the neighbor man heard about it. He curiously asked the little girl: “My father’s wife? Do you mean that the woman cooks and takes care of your it not your mon who gave birth to you? How many wives does your father have? Where is your mom?” He was laughing at the little girl: “If your father has more than one wife, he may have other children and you are not the only child he loves. He doesn’t love you, he doesn’t love his wife also...” He kept laughing.

The little girl said: “No! You are wrong.” Her chubby cheeks turned red. She cried out, rushed to home. Her father was feeding birds. He surprsingly looked at her when she ran back from the neighbor with tears on her face. He asked: “What’s wrong with you, my daughter? What has just happened? Tell me!” He sorftly hugged the little girl anfd cleaned tears on her chubby cheeks. He calmly explained to her: “My little daughter, I love you, I do love you and my wife, too. Except your grandmother, until now, she has been the only one woman I love. She is also the one I chose to be my wife as well as the mom of my children. You are child. An she, of course, is your mom. There is nothing different between my wife anf your mom.” He hugged her again and kissed on her chubby cheeks: “If you love my wife, kiss her”.

The little girl realized something. She stopped crying and cleaned her tears on hr face. She ran into the kitchen where her father’s wife was, as usual, cooking dinner. She hugged her father’s wife as tight as possiblie: “My father’s wife...... my mom... I love you.. I love you so much”. She kissed many times on her mom’s face.

Now, the little girl is no longer being staying with her close-knit family. She is working and has her own family. But every year, when the mid-autumn festival comes, she remembers about the moon-cakes that her father’s wife makes and her “ first lesson about love”. She loves her father, her father’s wife and her little family more than everything in this world.
