The beginning of a new year is a time of celebration, renewal, and spending quality time with family and friends. How these New Year traditions manifest themselves around the world can be quite unique.

China
In China, it is traditional to make paper cuttings. The older women would cut out spectacular shapes in red paper and display them in windows. Tradition holds that the cuttings would scare off evil spirits and prevent them from entering the family home. More recently, the cuttings are often machine-made in multi-colors.

Thailand
The New Year in Thailand is called Songkran. According to the Georgian calendar this New Year lasts for three days that is from the 13th to 15th April. As part of the New Year customs in Thailand the people take part in many rituals and rites on New Year. The people in Thailand follow the custom of splashing water. This is an important New Year according to the people of Thailand, as the people believe water to be symbolic of purification and rekindling. Although water splashing is a part of the customs the Thailand people regard delicate water splashing to be a symbol of the gentle nature of the Thailand people.

Taiwan
The New Year in Taiwan is celebrated with great joy and merriment. The people in Taiwan consider the New Year to be a perfect time to forget the past and begin life afresh. The New Year is a perfect time to bid farewell to the old year and to thank god for his blessings and fortification. The wide populaces in Taiwan begin the New Year celebrations by revering their descendents.

Japan
New Year in Japan is a perfect time to celebrate with family. It is at this time that one finds all shops, factories and offices in Japan closed. Shinto is the main religion of the Japanese. The Japanese have a firm belief in their religion. The New Year is celebrated on Jan 1st in Japan. A rope of straw is hung across the front of the houses. This is done to keep out the evil spirits and signifies good luck and happiness. The custom of laughing at the beginning of the New Year is believed to bring good luck for the people of Japan on New Year.

Korea
The Koreans celebrate the New Year on the first day of the lunar year. This day is called Sol-nal. On this day the people in Korea renovate their bonds of the past and make great preparations for the coming year.Custom has it that on the New Year's Eve night nobody is supposed to sleep. It was believed that if anyone slept on that night their eyebrows would turn white. In order to keep awake one found the lights in every room on. This was usually done to receive the brightness for the coming year and awaken the closed eyes.

America
The Americans in ancient times celebrated the New Year on 21st march. About 10 thousand years ago the Americans believed in a mythical god called Vahangn. The 21st of March was an important day for the Americans as it was not only a day to celebrate the New Year but the birthday of this god. It was also the first day of spring. Huge feasts were prepanavy by the Americans on the New Year to welcome and rejoice the peak of the environment.

Argentina
Argentina's New Year's Eve customs include running around the house with your suitcase to bring you many travels in the next year, eating beans to keep or get a better job, and wearing something new and pink.

Australia
Australia the country of dreams and glamour welcomes the New Year with admiration and hope. The people in Australia await the New Year with excitement and joy. There is a lot of craze and enthusiasm all around when the New Year soon approaches. People in Australia traditionally celebrate New Year on Jan 1st.

Austria
New Year's in Austria is called Sylvesterarend. And, in honor of Saint Sylvester, a red wine punch sweetened with sugar and cinnamon is consumed with gusto. Austrians wish to usher in good luck for the upcoming year through the exchange of Glücksbringers which are sweets in the shapes of gold coins, chimney sweeps, pigs, four-leaf clovers and horseshoes. On New Year's Day, molten lead is poured into a barrel of water. The cooled lead's shape is said to predict the future.
